Monzir Hamdin is probably best known as the winner of My Kitchen Rules (MKR) in 2022 with his partner Janelle. Together, they won the title of MKR champions by showcasing their incredible dishes that reflect his Sudanese and her Turkish heritage.
Monzir was born in Khartoum, Sudan. His family then migrated to Egypt when he was a few years old and lived there for five years. Seeking a better life, Monzir’s parents came to Australia as refugees in 2005 when he was 10 years old along with his eight siblings. Although he could not speak English, he persevered and managed to complete high school and college, where he earned a business diploma.
Currently, Monzir owns a small business selling spices. As if that’s not enough, he also works as an armed security guard, and in his spare time is a part-time personal trainer and occasional model for a large department store.
Here we provide a glimpse into Monzir’s inspiring African lifestyle.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life?
My day starts around 8am with a to-do list to stay organised. I tackle emails, paperwork, and tasks for my spice business and other jobs. I prioritize a afternoon workout and home-cooked meals whenever possible. After a busy day, I’m ready to take on my night job.
What dishes hold a special place in your heart?
My mum’s Sudanese eggplant dish is one that instantly reminds me of home.
Even talking about it makes me feel like I can taste it! Living away from my parents, this dish brings back warm memories and feels like a little taste of home. As my mum always said, ‘A warm, home-cooked meal can heal anything that’s broken!’
How would you describe your home, and what are some of the design elements or pieces that make it truly feel like “you”?
Home is where the heart is! Growing up in a big, loving Muslim family of 12, our house was filled with laughter, love, and delicious food, surrounded by Islamic art and religious texts. Now, living independently, I continue to cherish these traditions by incorporating Islamic words and texts into my own home. As a Leo, I also enjoy adding a personal touch with lion portraits – a subtle nod to my star sign!
Are there any travel destinations that have left a lasting impression on you, and why do you find yourself drawn to them?
Sudan, the Motherland of Africa, is my home and holds a special place in my heart. I left at a young age, but memories of its beauty before the war remain. My parents’ stories keep Sudan’s vibrant culture alive in my mind. I long to return one day. Sudan is my favourite country to visit, and I’m also keen to explore Japan in the future.
What hobbies or passions do you enjoy when you’re not working? How do these activities help you recharge or inspire you?
I’m passionate about fitness and cooking, often spending my free time training or experimenting in the kitchen. I specialize in BBQ and smoking meat, and enjoy cooking for my partner or myself after a long day. Lately, I’ve also developed an interest in fashion, using it as another outlet for self-expression, and camping!
